Franciscan Sisters of the Poor
The Franciscan Sisters of the Poor were founded in 1845 by
Blessed Frances Schervier in Aachen, Germany. The Sisters came
to the United States in 1858 to minister to the poor and sick.
Their Cincinnati motherhouse at 60 Compton Road has been a center
of healing ministry and community service for generations.
ABOUT THEIR ASSOCIATE PROGRAM
Associates are lay Christian women and men — young and retired,
married and single — who experience a personal call by God and
choose to share in the mission and healing charism of the
Franciscan Sisters of the Poor. We continue to live and grow
within our own particular lay lifestyle while sharing friendships,
faith, prayer, and ministry projects with the Sisters and other
Associates.
The healing charism of Blessed Frances Schervier forms the heart
of what it means to be in relationship with the Franciscan Sisters
of the Poor. As an international and multicultural congregation,
SFP Associates serve in Brazil, Italy, Senegal, West Africa, the
Philippines, and the United States.
In the Midwest, Associates have opportunities to volunteer at
the Franciscan Peddler Thrift Shop and with the Prayer Shawl
Ministry in Cincinnati, Ohio.
