Sisters of Notre Dame of the United States – Covington KY Region

In 1874, eight sisters arrived in Cleveland, OH, to continue the charism of the Sisters of Notre Dame in the United States of America. Over the next four years, two hundred sisters came to the United States to teach children of immigrants in northern Ohio and northern Kentucky. By 1924, the community’s growth led to the creation of three separate provinces: Toledo and Cleveland, OH, and Covington, KY.

That same year, sisters also began working in California, which became a fourth province in 1961. In 2020, the four provinces united as one province: SND of the United States of America, part of an international congregation of Catholic women, serving the Church in 19 countries on five continents.

We proclaim God’s goodness and provident care, committed to global transformation.

We honor the charism by living Gospel values in vibrant communities, by promoting Catholic education, especially for women and children, in urban and mission schools, and by fostering the fullness of life, especially for people who are poor, sick, and aged.

Sisters of Notre Dame of the United States (SND USA) currently minister in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Texas. In addition to ministry in the United States, our sisters support SND ministry in East Africa (including Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda), India, and Rome.

ABOUT THEIR ASSOCIATE COMMUNITY

The Covington Province has offered formal Association since 2003 and has grown to include nearly 100 + Associates across Kentucky, Ohio, and the US. Associates range in age from 37 to 92 and include married couples, single men and women, and people from all walks of life who feel called to share in the Sisters of Notre Dame mission.

Associates of the Sisters of Notre Dame are men and women, married and single, who share in the mission of Jesus Christ through the charism, spirituality, and ministry of the Sisters of Notre Dame. Associates make a non-vowed commitment to serve as partners with the sisters and extend the Notre Dame mission in their own life circumstances

HOW TO BECOME AN ASSOCIATE

Associate candidates enter a year of formation, joining together with Sisters and Associates to experience a fuller appreciation
of Notre Dame history, charism, and mission. Each candidate is accompanied by an experienced Associate throughout the formation
year. After the formation period, a covenant ceremony marks the formal commitment to the Notre Dame family.
