Sisters of Mercy
The Sisters of Mercy were founded in 1831 in Dublin, Ireland, by
Catherine McAuley. Today there are 1600 sisters/members and
3000 associates who share in their mission of compassion, service, justice, and
hospitality. The Sisters of Mercy in Cincinnati are part of the
congregation’s South Central Community.
ABOUT THEIR ASSOCIATE COMMUNITY
Mercy associates are women and men who hear and respond to a call from God,
an invitation to Gospel holiness lived through sharing in the mission of Mercy.
They desire to walk with and care for those who are poor, sick, and uneducated.
Associates, while maintaining individual lifestyles, seek to embody the spirit of Mercy
in partnership with the Sisters of Mercy through a mutual covenant.
As identified by its founder, Catherine McAuley,
the mission of Mercy is central for associates, who share in prayer,
community, ministry, and friendship.
While connected to the Sisters of Mercy, Associates come from many
different faith traditions but are respectful of and comfortable
with Christian symbolism and prayer. Associates do not take vows
like the Sisters of Mercy do.
HOW TO BECOME AN ASSOCIATE
The association process is generally about one year — occasionally
meeting with other Associates and Sisters of Mercy for prayer,
fellowship, support, and learning about the Mercy Association.
After this period of mutual discernment, a covenant ceremony marks
the formal commitment to the Mercy family.
